If your complaint list includes uneven rooms or temperature swings, the comfort features will matter more to you than the efficiency delta. If the house heats evenly and you just want dependable heat, a quality 95–96% single-stage install is an honest choice.

Can I still buy an 80% AFUE furnace?
For a typical Wisconsin replacement, no — federal standards effective 2026 require new gas furnaces to be condensing units at 95% AFUE or better. That also means replacements in homes that never had sidewall venting need a venting plan, which is part of a proper quote.
Will a higher-AFUE furnace fix my uneven rooms?
