Short cycling is a heating cycle that ends before the thermostat is satisfied, repeating in quick bursts. It's a symptom, not a diagnosis — the furnace is either being told to stop, or protecting itself.
Is your furnace overheating? (the most common cause)
A furnace that can't move enough air across its heat exchanger overheats, trips its high-limit switch, and shuts the burners off to protect itself — then cools, relights, and repeats. The usual culprits are painfully ordinary: a loaded filter, closed or blocked supply registers, a matted-up blower wheel, or an evaporator coil above the furnace that's packed with dust. This is the failure mode you can often fix yourself: put in a clean filter, open every register, and see if the cycling stops. If it keeps tripping the limit, stop resetting it — repeated overheating is how heat exchangers crack.
Is the vent or condensate system blocking the run?
High-efficiency furnaces prove their venting is clear before and during every cycle. A snow-drifted sidewall vent (a real Wisconsin problem after a nor'easter-style blow), a sagging vent pipe holding water, or a clogged condensate trap will flip the pressure switch mid-cycle and kill the burn. If short cycling started during the first deep cold snap or right after heavy snow, check that the intake and exhaust pipes on the side of the house are clear before you call anyone.
Is the thermostat lying to the furnace?
A thermostat mounted above a supply register, in direct sun, or on a wall warmed by a fireplace chimney satisfies quickly and shuts the furnace down long before the rest of the house is warm. Weak batteries and loose thermostat wiring do the same thing intermittently. This one is cheap to fix and easy to prove: if the thermostat area feels warm while the far rooms are cold, placement is a suspect.
Was the furnace oversized on day one?
An oversized furnace slams the house up to temperature and shuts off before air has mixed, over and over, all winter. You get short cycles, uneven rooms, more wear, and worse efficiency — permanently. There's no repair for oversizing except right-sizing the next replacement with a real Manual J load calculation, which is exactly what a properly-sized quote should show you. It's one of the most common things we find behind chronic short cycling in newer subdivisions.
When is short cycling a safety issue?
The flame-rollout switch and the high-limit switch are safety devices; if either is tripping repeatedly, the furnace is telling you something is genuinely wrong — blocked heat exchanger passages, venting failure, or overheating that can crack the heat exchanger. Repeated limit trips plus any smell of exhaust, soot streaking, or a CO alarm means shut it down and call. A cracked heat exchanger is the one furnace problem we treat as a same-day, shut-it-off issue.

How short is 'short cycling'?
A healthy cycle typically runs long enough to warm the whole house evenly — often 10–20 minutes in cold weather depending on sizing. Bursts of 1–5 minutes repeating several times an hour, especially with rooms still cold, is the pattern worth diagnosing.
Can I just keep resetting the furnace?
Resetting past a safety lockout without fixing the cause is how small problems become heat-exchanger problems. One reset after a filter change is reasonable; a furnace that locks out daily needs a diagnostic, not a routine.
