Warranty Math: Parts vs. Labor vs. Extended Coverage — What's Actually Covered?
Three separate layers: the manufacturer's parts warranty (the part ships free, labor doesn't), the contractor's workmanship warranty (the install itself), and optional labor/extended coverage (the layer that actually protects your wallet in year 8). Most warranty disappointment comes from assuming layer one includes layer three.

Definition
A parts warranty replaces failed components; a labor warranty pays the humans who diagnose and install them; a workmanship warranty covers installation defects. 'Fully covered' means all three — and usually isn't what a brochure means.
What does the standard manufacturer parts warranty really pay for?
The component, period. Typical structure: 10 years on parts (if registered — see below), longer on heat exchangers, sometimes special terms on compressors. When a blower motor dies in year 7, the motor is free; the diagnostic visit, the removal and install labor, refrigerant recovery if it's a sealed-system part — that's on you, and on premium components the labor can be several times the visit minimum. This isn't a scam; it's just what 'parts warranty' means. The scandal is how rarely anyone says it out loud at sale time, which is why we do — in the quote, in writing.
What's the registration trap?
Most manufacturers grant their full warranty term (say, 10 years parts) only if the equipment is registered within a window — commonly 60–90 days after install — and quietly default to a shorter base term (often 5 years) if nobody does it. Guess whose job registration silently becomes when the installer doesn't handle it. On our installs, registration is our checklist item, and you get the confirmation for your records. If you bought a system elsewhere in the last couple months: stop reading and go register it — it's the highest-ROI paperwork in homeownership.
When do extended/labor warranties make financial sense?
Price them like the insurance they are: cost of coverage versus the realistic repair exposure in the covered years. Aftermarket extended plans (third-party or manufacturer-branded) typically add hundreds per system, with claim procedures, transfer rules, and sometimes per-visit deductibles buried in the terms — read who actually pays the contractor and how fast, because slow-paying plans quietly narrow which contractors will honor them. Coverage bundled by the installer — like the 12-year parts-and-labor warranty on our Signature Series tier, with claims handled owner-direct — removes exactly the friction third-party plans add. Compare on four axes: years, parts AND labor, who you call, and transferability at sale.
How do you compare warranty offers between quotes?
Make a four-line table per quote: parts term (registered), labor term, workmanship term, and claim path (who do you call, who pays whom). Then two stress-test questions for each bidder: 'Year 8, the ECM blower fails — walk me through the repair and what I pay.' and 'You install it, another company services it in year 5 — what's still covered?' Vague answers now predict contested claims later. And keep the maintenance-records habit either way: every warranty layer reserves the right to ask whether the equipment was maintained, and two documented tune-ups a year is the answer that ends that conversation.

Common questions
Does skipping annual maintenance void my warranty?
Manufacturers require 'proper maintenance' and can request records on major claims — especially compressors and heat exchangers. Documented annual service is both the cheap insurance and the genuine best practice; membership makes the documentation automatic.
Are warranties transferable when I sell the house?
Varies sharply: some manufacturer warranties transfer once with a fee and paperwork window, some drop to a shorter term, third-party plans have their own rules. If resale is near-term, ask before you buy — transferability is a real selling point done right.
What does On Time's workmanship coverage look like?
Our installs carry workmanship coverage on the labor and installation details, Signature Series installs carry the 12-year parts-and-labor umbrella, and On The Dot Club members hold a lifetime repair guarantee on covered repairs while enrolled. Ask us to put all three in writing for your specific quote — we will.
