A hydronic (hot-water) boiler is a sealed appliance that heats water — it shouldn't boil it — and pumps it through a piping loop to radiators or baseboard convectors, returning cooler water to be reheated.

How does a hydronic system actually heat your rooms?

The boiler fires, heats loop water (typically to 140–180°F in a conventional system), and a circulator pump pushes it through supply piping to each radiator or baseboard run. Metal fins and radiator mass transfer that heat to the room by radiation and gentle convection — no blower, no ducts, no filter. The cooled water returns to the boiler and goes around again. Zone valves or multiple circulators let different floors run on their own thermostats, which is why boiler homes often have the most even heat on the block.

Why do so many older Wisconsin homes have boilers?

Radiator heat predates ductwork. Homes built in the early-to-mid 1900s — think older Waukesha neighborhoods and Milwaukee-county inner suburbs — were built around cast-iron radiators, and many still run beautifully on their original piping. The trade-offs: no ducts means no central AC or whole-home filtration riding along, and cooling usually gets added later as a ductless mini-split system. What's normal, and what's a warning sign?

Normal: quiet ticking as pipes expand, a system pressure needle sitting roughly in the 12–20 psi band when cold, radiators warming evenly top to bottom. Warning signs: pressure creeping high or dropping repeatedly (feed or expansion-tank problems), gurgling or cold-topped radiators (air in the loop that needs bleeding), water at the pressure-relief valve, rust streaks at pipe joints, or the boiler cycling rapidly. Water leaves evidence — a boiler problem you can see on the floor is a call-now problem, because hidden leaks feed continuously and rot what they touch.

What maintenance does a boiler really need?

Less than a furnace day-to-day, but the annual visit matters more: combustion check, pressure and expansion-tank verification, relief-valve test, circulator inspection, bleeding air from the high points, and a look at the venting — especially on older natural-draft units sharing a chimney. Boilers fail quietly and expensively when ignored, and the failure usually announces itself during the first hard cold spell. An annual service each fall is the whole game.

Usually air trapped in the upstairs runs or a circulation problem. Bleeding the upstairs radiators is the first step; if it recurs every few weeks, the system is pulling in air somewhere or the expansion tank is waterlogged, and that's a diagnostic visit.

Can a boiler home get central air conditioning?

There are no ducts to reuse, so 'central' AC means either adding a full duct system (invasive) or — far more common — a multi-zone ductless mini-split system that cools the key rooms. Ductless also adds efficient shoulder-season heat as a bonus.

How long does a boiler last?

Cast-iron boilers routinely reach 20–30+ years with maintenance; modern high-efficiency condensing boilers trade some of that longevity for meaningfully lower gas use. Which trade is right depends on how long you'll own the house — that's a conversation, not a formula.
