Definition
The 'problem room' pattern: a space added after the original HVAC design (addition), wrapped in glass (sunroom), or floored over unconditioned space (bonus room over the garage). All three combine high loads with weak duct service.
Why is the bonus room over the garage always the wrong temperature?
Count its exposed surfaces: floor over an unheated garage, two or three exterior walls, and a big ceiling under the roof — five or six cold (or hot) faces versus a normal bedroom's one or two. Then look at its duct run: typically the longest branch in the house, snaking through that same cold attic, arriving with the least airflow to the room that needs the most. Air sealing and insulation help and are worth doing first — but the honest end-state for most of these rooms is dedicated equipment, and a cold-climate ductless head is dedicated equipment without a renovation.
What does a sunroom actually demand from HVAC?
Glass everywhere means enormous solar gain on a July afternoon and enormous heat loss on a January night — the widest load swing of any room in the house, often needing cooling and heating within the same week in a Wisconsin shoulder season. Tying a sunroom into the central system either overconditions the rest of the house or underserves the sunroom. A single-zone head sized to the room's real calculated load handles both extremes on its own thermostat, and shuts fully off for the weeks you're not using the space — something a tapped duct branch can't do.
What should a proper install include in our climate?
A room-by-room load calculation for the space (glass area and orientation matter enormously in sunrooms), a cold-climate-rated head if it's the room's only heat, the outdoor unit mounted above snow line with defrost drainage planned, a condensate route that won't freeze, a dedicated electrical circuit, and a mechanical permit with inspection. That last one isn't ceremony: additions and converted spaces are precisely where insurance and resale scrutiny land hardest, and a permitted install is your paper trail that the work was done right.
What are the alternatives, and when do they make sense?
Electric baseboard or a cove heater: cheap to install, expensive every month, cooling not included — defensible only for a rarely-used space. Extending ducts: right when the room is adjacent to trunk capacity, wrong when the run crosses unconditioned framing (see our ductwork-vs-ductless guide). Window units: seasonal, loud, and a security hole, but honest as a stopgap. A ductless head costs more up front than any stopgap and less over the years you actually use the room — which is the correct frame for a space you intend to live in.
