It's the outdoor temperature where the heat pump's cost per BTU equals the furnace's. Above it, the heat pump is the cheaper heat; below it, gas is. The thermostat switches automatically at whatever crossover we program. At typical WE Energies rates it lands around 25–35°F, but your exact number depends on your electric rate — which is why our calculator asks for it.
Is dual-fuel more likely to break because it's two systems?
It's more components, honestly — but each component works less. The heat pump doesn't grind through polar vortexes, and the furnace doesn't run 2,000 hours a year. What matters more than part count is commissioning quality: correct refrigerant charge, correct crossover, correct staging. That's on the installer.
Can I add a heat pump to my existing newer furnace?
