Why did my quote include a chimney liner for the water heater?

If your old 80% furnace shared a chimney with the water heater, removing the furnace leaves the water heater venting alone into a flue sized for both appliances. Exhaust can cool too fast, condense, and corrode the chimney — so code (and physics) may require a properly sized liner. It's a real scope item, not padding; any honest bid on the same house should include it.

What maintenance does a condensing furnace add?

The condensate path — trap, drain line, and pump if you have one — should be checked and cleaned annually, and the intake/exhaust terminations kept clear of snow and ice (a genuinely Wisconsin chore after a drifting storm).
