Electronic air cleaners chase finer particles like smoke with washable cells and a small power draw. UV lights don't filter air at all — they stop biological growth on the coil and drain pan. Match the tool to your actual complaint before spending anything.

  • Start with the complaint, not the catalog: visible dust and allergies → media filter. Smoke and ultra-fines (woodsmoke summers, cigarettes, cooking) → electronic or high-MERV media. Musty AC smell and coil slime → UV.
  • A deep-pleat media cabinet at MERV 11–13 is the residential sweet spot — real filtration without strangling airflow the way an over-tight 1" filter can.
  • Electronic air cleaners trade filter purchases for cleaning chores: the cells are washable but only work as well as your cleaning schedule.

Media cabinets ask for a filter swap once or twice a year. Electronic cells demand washing every one to three months to keep working. UV wants an annual bulb. Pick the upgrade whose chores you'll actually do — a neglected electronic cleaner underperforms a fresh media filter every time.

Filtration always costs some airflow. A properly sized 4–5" cabinet costs the least per unit of capture; jamming a super-high-MERV 1" filter into a builder-grade slot costs the most and can starve the system. Static pressure — not marketing — decides what your ducts can afford.

If the smell shows up when cooling starts, or the last tech showed you a slimy evaporator, UV attacks the source directly. If your air is fine and your coil is clean, UV is solving a problem you don't have.

Choose the media cabinet when

You want the biggest, most reliable IAQ improvement per dollar with the least fuss — which is most homes. Dust, dander, pollen, and general allergy load all drop, and the only chore is a filter swap at tune-up time. This is our default first recommendation, and it's the cheapest of the three.

Electronic air cleaner

Choose the electronic cleaner when

Fine particles are your specific enemy — smoke sensitivity, a wood stove, heavy cooking — and you'll honestly keep up with washing the cells. Done right it captures what media filters miss; done lazily it's an expensive spacer.

UV germicidal light

Choose UV when

The problem is biological: recurring musty smell when the AC runs, visible coil growth, or a household sensitive to mold. UV keeps the coil clean at the source. Pair it with decent filtration — it's a complement, never a substitute.

Also consider: duct cleaning first

If the ducts themselves are lined with construction dust or years of buildup, cleaning the pipes before upgrading the filter gets you more air quality per dollar — otherwise the new filter spends its first year catching what the ducts shed. Common questions

Honest answers, before you decide

Can I just buy the highest MERV filter at the hardware store?

Careful — a very high-MERV 1" filter in a standard slot can choke airflow, freeze coils, and overwork the blower. The glossary rule we publish: match the filter to the system, not to a marketing claim. A deep-pleat cabinet exists precisely to deliver high MERV with acceptable airflow. Measuring static pressure tells the truth; we do that during tune-ups.

Do electronic air cleaners make ozone?

Some older and bargain designs produce trace ozone as a byproduct, which is exactly what sensitive lungs don't need. Certified low-ozone models are the answer — that's what we install, and it's a fair question to ask anyone quoting you one.

Will UV light clean the air in the rooms too?

Not meaningfully — air moves past the bulb far too fast for whole-air disinfection at residential intensities. Coil-mounted UV's honest job is keeping the wet coil and pan from growing things. Anyone selling UV as an air purifier is overclaiming; anyone selling it as coil protection is describing what it does.
